SPACE FOR EXPERIENCES IN WATER
The main idea behind the Public Aquatic Centre is to create an inspiring meeting place based in and around water. The pool landscape is designed to attract people of all ages, including those who may not feel at home in the standard rectangular sports pool. In the Aquatic Centre, water can be explored on the visitors’ own terms; during play, relaxation and learning. The attraction will inspire more residents to spend time in the water and improve their swimming skills.
The project is inspired by the surrounding rugged landscape. It has six pools, from shallow water surfaces to a deep-water pool and an outdoor pool. The water fills a landscape that moves across multiple levels. Various water depths, heights, water area and lighting makes it suitable for a wide variety of activities and experiences in water. The main construction material is waterproof concrete, which is treated to customize the surface to its functions. One area has a softer pool floor and walls to climb on. Another has good acoustics for verbal communication and a suitable depth for beginners. Some of the sloping surfaces are structures that can be explored and used as seating.
A veil of thin steel columns along the exterior sides allows the characteristic faceted interior landscapes to be seen from the outside. The simple exterior shape will fit into a modern urban environment while the silhouette of the roof makes the project a landmark for the port.
